"There are no tyrannies that would not try to limit art, because they can see the power of art. Art can tell the world things that cannot be shared otherwise. It is art that conveys feelings."

Drawing
charcoal wall drawing

The monumental charcoal drawing created by Anna Scherbyna for M HKA can be regarded as a counterpart to her previous project, realized in PinchukArtCentre in 2020 and titled ‘Disposition of the Power Gaze Using the Example of Wartime Landscape’. In her exploration of the landscape genre and military museum dioramas, the artist problematizes the position of the viewer and the centralizing, comprehensive view peculiar to the panoramic images. Opposite to the heroic spirit of classical dioramas, Scherbyna’s works reveal the reverse side of war. The curve of the wall and the scale of the drawing exclude the possibility of taking a distance and grasping the full composition. As a result, the poignant images of destruction crash down on the viewer, while the intermittent charcoal strokes intensify the impression.
