"There are no tyrannies that would not try to limit art, because they can see the power of art. Art can tell the world things that cannot be shared otherwise. It is art that conveys feelings."

 - Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the President of Ukraine

Kerry James Marshall

Small Pin-Up (Lens Flare) , 2013
Painting , 76.2 x 60.9 cm

The woman in Small Pin-up (Lens-Fare) (2013) turns away from us, but again uses her arm gesturally, to deny the typical view of women in eroticised imagery. The lens-flare in the images also blocks our ability to see everything clearly, whilst refering to the camera lens. Here Marshall plays afresh with visibility and invisibility, of seeing and not wanting to be seen.
